Browne, the Governor, Milledgeville, Ga., correspondence pertains to the acceptance of a Commission in the Confederate Army; serving as Governor from 1857-63, Joseph E. Brown was a force in Georgia politics for decades, a strong supporter of the Confederacy, and raised an army of 100,000 elderly men and young boys to oppose Sherman's "March to the Sea" in 1864; some reinforced aged fold splits, very fine for this; a handsome example of a rural Hall Co., Georgia usage. 1223 c 5a image#5a, 10c Carmine, huge to ample margins all around, distinctive vibrant deep carmine shade, faint corner crease at lower left, tied by bar grid cancel to orange cover, with "Clinton, La./17 Sep 1962" c.d.s. at left, addressed to Calvin Taylor, Handsboro(ugh), Miss.; absolutely fascinating address docketing by the sender speaks to the fragile nature of the Confederate postal lines, Union forces were very active near Baton Rouge (30 miles to the south) at this time, sender suggests safer routings "via--Jackson, Miss, or Mobile", additionally he requests "If there is no mail from Mobile to Miss City or Handsboro.....please send by any Con(federate) soldier-or traveler"; slightly reduced at right, extremely fine; a true Confederate postal history gem with rare insight into the hardships of the postal system.
