1149 c Confederate States Handstamped/Manuscript "Paid" and "Due" cover group, comprised of 76 covers, all with handstamped (51) or manuscript (25) "Paid" or soldier's "Due" markings from the Confederate period, very strong in Virginia (35), but well represented with other states such as Alabama (2), Georgia (13), Louisiana (2), Mississippi (5), North Carolina (8), South Carolina (6) and Tennessee (5), a large variety of towns with very little duplication, we note Green Pond, S.C., Trinity College, N.C., Horn Lake, MS., Dallas and Jackson, La., Cohutta Springs, White Oak and Dirt Town, Ga., Mossy Creek and Palmers Springs, Va., also Alabama, N.C. and Virginia used patriotics and a legal size envelope addressed to A.H. Stephens from Conyers, Ga., a few with original correspondence, some mixed condition as usual for these, but also many very scarce usages and small towns on fine-very fine covers; examination is absolutely essential to accurately evaluate this wonderful lot. Weakly in Pensacola, Fla. "care Col. S.A.M. Wood, Fort Barancus"; Sterling A. M. Wood was Colonel of the 7th Alabama Infantry stationed at Pensacola, he became a brigadier general in command of five regiments at the battle of Shiloh, later leading his brigade at Perrysville, Murfreesboro, and Chicamauga, even though he suffered a head wound at Perrysville; repaired along top of cover and flap at back replaced; an interesting historical usage.
