Historically Significant Covers
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1073 c imageLieutenant-General D.H. Hill, Power of Attorney and correspondence, enclosed in small envelope addressed in his hand to Charlotte, N.C., with clear "Chattanooga, Tenn./19 Aug (1863)" c.d.s. tying a 10c Greenish blue (#11c), huge margins to just in at lower right; a native of South Carolina and graduate of West Point, Daniel H. Hill, was appointed lieutenant-general on July 10, 1863 and put in command of several Confederate divisions, by August 20th this corps was defending the line of the Tennessee River at Chattanooga from Union advance. Chattanooga was subsequently abandoned on September 8th, just days before Lt.-General Hill and his troops fought Union forces at Chickamauga, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, where casualties were estimated at 34,624 men. The letter (written and signed in Hill's hand from the battle front) re-transmitting Hill's Power of Attorney (signed) and datelined Chattanooga, Tenn, Aug 17th (19th) 1863, gives a glimpse into the fight to come, as Hill states "Yesterday for the first time the Yankees opened their artillery upon us. Genl Bragg thinks that they are about to cross. I do not however apprehend any movement till Meade and Grant are ready."; cover has very minor edge wear and is slightly reduced at left, enclosures have normal folding and are very fine, signatures are extraordinarily clear and extremely fine; an incomparable group of Confederate artifacts which can not be overlooked by the Civil War collector or student of the Chattanooga-Chickamauga campaigns. Valley Dist., Lacy's Springs (Va.)", docketed "Private" at upper left and across flap at back; next to Robert E. Lee, Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson is the most revered of all Confederate commanders, an 1846 graduate of West Point and VMI professor, he holds the distinction of having his brigade be the only such unit to have its nickname become its official designation (the "Stonewall Brigade"), his (Shenandoah) Valley Campaign of 1862 is one of the most studied campaigns of military history, demonstrating how a numerically inferior force can defeat larger forces by fast movement, surprise attack and intelligent use of terrain, in late 1862 newly appointed General W.E. (Grumble) Jones was placed in charge of the Valley District, this private communication was undoubtedly sent to General Jones during late 1862 or early 1863 at Laceys Springs, the scene of constant skirmish and fighting well into 1864; trivial portion of flap missing, still extremely fine; any document from the hand of Jackson during the Civil War period is of significance, especially one of a military nature, an item of significant importance for the serious student or collector of the Confederacy or the Civil War; signed Brian Green. Ruggles was assigned to New Orleans in October 1861 to organize a brigade, receiving the former cover while stationed there, in February 1862 the brigade transferred to Corinth, Miss., later to march on Grant's Army at Shiloh in early April, just a few days after receiving the latter correspondence; fine-very fine; a fascinating pair of covers which trace a Confederate General's movements leading up to one of the most pivotal battles of the Civil War.
