#J8, 1c Deep brown special printing, a magnificent mint example of this immensely rare and terribly difficult stamp, easily being among the very finest examples extant, and certainly the finest we have ever had the pleasure to offer in our auctions, as the condition of this stamp is the exact opposite of what is normally encountered with the One Cent Postage Due Special Printing, usually the vast majority have faults and most are found with disturbed gum or no gum at all, this exciting copy is fabulously bright and fresh, with full original gum that has never been hinged, it is completely fault free and sports an incredible overall brilliance and crispness, with prooflike color and impression on bright paper, while centered right (as most examples are found), this is actually better centered than most, very fine; a marvelous condition rarity that is perfect for the collector who has been patiently waiting for the appearance of a truly choice example; according to William E. Mooz, in his extensive study of the Postage Due Special Printings, the One Cent value is actually far more rare than most realize and the quantity issued figure in the Scott catalog is erroneous, as the vast majority of the approximately 9,000 One Cent stamps sold as Special Printings were simply regular issues, Mr. Mooz conjectures that only about 500 actual Special Printings were sold, and that perhaps as many as 400 of these purchased by a Mr. G.B. Calman were destroyed; 1995 PSE certificate (specifically stating n.h.). (Image)
