822 O 563d image#563d, 11c Light blue, imperforate, vertical strip of three, clear "San Francisco/California" precancels, large margins on three sides, slightly in at bottom, some insignificant minor wrinkling, very fine; one of only two known imperforate multiples of this stamp, this being the larger and finer of the two; the other known multiple is a pair with similar San Francisco precancel (ex-Lilly) and is almost completely separated by scissors, this strip of three was discovered in the early 1980s, and since that time no other imperforate multiples have surfaced; one of the most important error rarities in United States philately and an essential addition to a gold-medal exhibition collection of the 1922-29 Regular issue series; 1983 PF certificate. 839 O 596 image#596, 1c Green, rotary press perforated 11, incredibly well centered for this challenging stamp, with its perforations well clear of the design all round, deep luxuriant color on bright paper, neat wavy line machine postmark rather than the more usual and less desirable Kansas City precancel, faint and unimportant corner crease at top right and the accompanying certificate describes a "tiny tear" which is barely perceptible and minute, in fact it scarcely qualifies as a minute break, still very fine and choice. This remarkable example of one of the greatest rarities in United States philately is one of only twelve recorded - all of which are used. There is no known unused copy. Only five are known to exist without the Kansas City precancel and, out of this select group, the example offered here from the Floyd collection is one of the two best centered examples. The realizations of the last two #596's to appear at auction give potential bidders a basis to formulate their bids. In the October 1998 sale of the Robert Zoellner collection there was a machine cancelled copy, whose centering was almost as nice as the Floyd example, having slightly irregular perforations at left, a corner perf. crease at top right and it sold for $88,000.00 (including premium). In a "Rarities of the World" sale (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc., May 2001) there was a sound precancelled copy, whose centering was just slightly inferior to the Floyd example, and it sold for $104,500.00 (including premium). In our opinion, the example offered here compares very favorably to each of the two which have sold in the past three years. Given the fact that only two examples of #596 have appeared on the auction block in that time clearly demonstrates the extreme rarity of the stamp and the infrequent opportunities which exist to potentially acquire one. Accompanied by a 1992 PF certificate. (Image) 70,000.00
