628 O 389 image#389, 3c Deep violet, Ty. I, "Orangeburg Coil", perf. 12 vert., extraordinarily well centered for this difficult stamp, possessing large and rather well balanced margins, characteristic deep violet shade, tied to small piece by the usual wavy line machine postmark, completely free of any of the faults so often associated with the majority of known examples, extremely fine for this. The "Orangeburg" coil was issued in 1911, in very limited quantities, specifically for use by the Bell Pharmaceutical Co. to mail their samples to doctors. The stamp offered here is still on a small piece of the original mailing envelope which contained just such a sample. Any example of the Three Cent "Orangeburg" coil is a major rarity. However, to find one fault free is an especially difficult challenge, as many were slightly damaged due to the contents of the envelope being a bit bulky, often resulting in creases. The ultimate challenge is to find an example that is not only fault free, but possesses choice centering as well. Such is the case with the example offered here, being one of a very few known examples that is both sound and can boast exceptional centering. Accompanied by a 1954 letter of authenticity from Stanley Gibbons, as well as a 1988 PF certificate: ex-Stollnitz. (Image) for fine 11,500.00
