270 O 141 var. image#141 var., 15c Orange, with "I" grill, a used example of this enormously rare and distinctive grill type that is slightly smaller in size than the usual "G" grill found on almost all grilled National Bank Notes; until very recently it was thought that only the lower values of the series were found with this elusive grill, with the sole exception of one Fifteen Cent stamp that was certified in 1955 as an "I" grill by the Philatelic Foundation, in recent years two additional used examples (including the copy offered here) and one mint single have now been certified as genuine Fifteen Cent "I" grills, making this one of the rarest stamps in United States philately; fairly well centered, rich vibrant color, well defined grill points than can be measured at no less than 9 points in width and 11 points in height, small corner crease at top left, very fine appearance; the Scott catalog, while mentioning that most values (except the 12c, 24c and 30c) exist with "I" grills, they do not attempt to price them, so establishing price levels, especially on the very rare 15c, is still to be determined by the ultimate realizations at public auction offerings such as this; 1983 PF certificate not mentioning specific grill type, as well as a 1999 PF certificate specifically identifying this as an "I" grill; additionally accompanied by a copy of a Linn's article dated November 16, 1998 discussing the rarity of "I" grills. (Image) Est. 5,000-7,500

Closed or SOLD for $4,250.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
271 O 142 image#142, 24c Purple with grill, virtually perfectly centered, with considerably stronger color and impression than typically associated with this difficult stamp, easily identifiable grill points, mostly face-free and unobtrusive postmarks, extremely fine; a very rare sound and premium quality used example of this classic rarity; while a number of used #142's have come to the market in the past several years (primarily from an old-time hoard), few have been as choice and well centered as this; 1991 PF certificate. (Image) 6,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $6,500.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
272 ng 143 image#143, 30c Black with grill, a gem unused example of this very rare stamp, featuring near perfect centering amid extravagantly large margins, intensely rich color and a well defined impression on bright paper, easily identifiable grill points, extremely fine and striking; any unused example of the Thirty Cent grilled Bank Note is a rarity, but to find one both sound and in such choice quality is a significant challenge; certainly among the finest centered and margined mint or unused #143's in existence; this remarkable stamp realized an impressive $12,100.00 when last offered at auction in 1991; ex-"Angel" Collection; 1984 PF certificate. (Image) 6,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $12,000.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
273 O 144 image#144, 90c Carmine with grill, extraordinarily well centered within huge margins that would be impressive for any Bank Note stamp, but even more so for this difficult grilled high value, wonderfully rich and radiant color, light strikes of both red and black postmarks that are not at all obtrusive, faint (as always) but easily identifiable grill points, extremely fine; an incredibly difficult stamp to find in such exceptional quality, particularly being so lightly cancelled; 1985 PF certificate. (Image) 1,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $3,000.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM

(Image) for hinged 300.00

Closed or SOLD for $2,400.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
278 og 148 image#148, 6c Carmine, exceptionally well centered and margined, bright and fresh, with considerably stronger color and impression than typically found, full o.g. lightly hinged, extremely fine; a choice mint example of this difficult stamp whose catalog value, in our opinion, does not adequately reflect the true scarcity of mint examples; 1992 PF certificate. (Image) 625.00

Closed or SOLD for $1,800.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
