103 og 17 image#17, 12c Black, a fabulously fresh and choice mint example, possessing an overall freshness and brilliance we have not seen on any other copy, featuring truly prooflike color and an excellent clarity of impression on remarkably fresh paper, four particularly large and wonderfully well balanced margins, pristine full o.g. which is both unusually clean and lightly hinged, superb. The 1851 Twelve Cent Washington is one of the most difficult of all the early classics to find mint, let alone in premium quality. And to find one still retaining its original gum is an immense rarity. When one does encounter a mint/unused copy they are invariably found without gum. Very few completely sound original gum examples exist of Scott #17, and fewer still are found in such outstanding condition as the one offered here from the Kelly Brothers collection. We believe that it is very telling than none of the great United States collections sold in the past several years (Wampler, Zoellner, Weisman, Golin and Lyons) had an original gum example of this stamp (some did not even have an unused copy). The example offered here surely ranks among the finest mint original gum singles in existence, as it combines all of the crucial elements (color, impression, margins, freshness and gum) to be considered a true condition rarity; 1998 PF certificate for a pair, this being the right stamp. 106 O 17 image#17, 12c Black, an exquisite quality used horizontal pair of this difficult classic, being in a condition unlike any other pair we have had the pleasure to offer in our auctions, possessing four large and symmetrical margins which surround an incredibly sharp and detailed impression, plus its color is especially deep and intense, all on bright white paper, beautifully postmarked with a single central strike of a Cincinnati, Ohio town c.d.s. in deep blue, extremely fine in every regard; a gem pair with great eye appeal; 1985 PF certificate. 111 og 25 image#25, 3c Rose, Ty. I, the mint single offered here is one of the finest examples of this rare stamp we have offered in some time, as it possesses an overall freshness and brilliance that is very rarely encountered, with a spectacular resplendent color and a deeply etched impression, in addition the stamp is perfectly centered which is a very rare occurrence, full original gum which has been lightly hinged, extremely fine; actually one of the rarest stamps in the sale in terms of overall condition; 1998 PF certificate. 112 O 27 image#27, 5c Brick red, Ty. Closing..Nov-17, 05:00 PM
113 O 28 image#28, 5c Red brown, Ty. I, lovely used example, extraordinarily well centered within uncharacteristically large margins, with its perforations clearing the design all around, rich color and impression, red town and black cancels, extremely fine; a surprisingly difficult stamp to find in choice used condition, as virtually every example one encounters has its design impinged by its perforations on at least one side; a true condition rarity; 1996 PF certificate. (Image) 600.00

Closed or SOLD for $1,800.00
Closing..Nov-17, 05:00 PM
114 O 30A image#30A, 5c Brown, Ty. II, exceptionally well centered amid especially large margins for this, deep rich color, grid cancel, extremely fine and choice; 1983 PF certificate. (Image) 260.00

115 og 33 image#33, 10c Green, Ty. III, an enormously rare mint example, possessing mathematically perfect centering amid uncharacteristically large and even margins, strikingly intense rich color and a strong detailed early impression, full clean o.g. which has been lightly hinged, truly superb. The Ten Cent 1857 perforated stamps from Plate 1 are among the most difficult U.S. stamps to find well centered. To find mint examples is even more challenging. And to find a mint example that is both sound and well centered is next to impossible. The example offered here is widely regarded as one of the premier perforated stamps from this plate. And there is little question that this is likely to be the finest mint #32 in existence. A stamp that is missing in even the most advanced collections of mint United States stamps. Accompanied by 1992 and 1994 PF certificates, as well as a 1996 PSE certificate; ex-Morris, Weisman (where it realized $9,900.00 in our May 1998 sale). (Image) 4,500.00
