779 og PR101 image#PR101, $6.00 Pale blue, exceptionally fresh, with lovely characteristic pastel blue color and a particularly detailed impression, exceedingly well centered, full clean o.g., h.r., extremely fine for this. A magnificent, fault free, mint example of the 1894 Six Dollar Bureau issue Newspaper - the rarest regularly issued Newspaper stamp. Of the mere 14 examples which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation, this is the only sound example in existence, and one of the few that still has original gum. The first appearance of this stamp at public auction in decades. Clearly ranking as one of the rarest stamps in all of United States philately, the opportunity to acquire such an important stamp is an understandably infrequent occasion. In fact, according to our research, there have been only four other examples of a #PR101 offered in the past eleven years. There was an original gum example, with barely fine centering, offered in the 1990 "Rarities of the World" Sale (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc.); an unused (without gum) example, with centering not as nice as the example offered here, sold in the 1992 "Connoissuer" Sale (Superior Galleries); an unused straight edged copy with fine centering in the 1993 "Rarities of the World Sale"; and the most recent example to have appeared on the auction market was in our January 2000 sale of the Larry Lyons collection. The Lyons example, by far the finest to have appeared on the market up until that time, had original gum, was similarly centered to the example offered here, but did have a very minor small edge crease and a trivial perforation tip thin. Despite these flaws the Lyons example, after spirited bidding, realized the record price of $52,250.00 - the highest price ever paid for a Newspaper stamp at auction. One can only imagine what this choice, fault free, original gum example may realize, considering that some serious collectors will only bid on stamps that are fault free, no matter how rare or infrequently seen at auction. Obviously there were several interested underbidders on the Lyons example, and combined with those collectors who only aggressively seek out sound, original gum stamps, the final hammer price of this unique example may prove to be even more noteworthy than the Lyons copy. Signed Sidney D. Harris and accompanied by a 1955 PF certificate. (Image) 22,500.00

780 ogngO PR1/125 #PR1/125, Comprehensive largely mint/unused newspaper collection of 74 items, the vast majority of which are different, only a couple being used, containing many scarce values including a number of stamps which catalog between $150.00 and $700.00 each and, unlike other newspaper collections one sees, nearly all of the stamps have been correctly identified and cataloged, a large majority have gum, although some higher catalog items are unused (no gum), as to be expected there are the usual flaws associated with these difficult stamps, although they are typically of a minor nature and the great majority have very attractive appearance, with largely excellent centering throughout; not your typical newspaper balance lot. 12,000.00+
