Covalt and numbered "(17)" in manuscript at upper left, Overman Wheel Co. handstamp, backstamped with large purple "Victor Bicycle Messenger Service./Fresno and San Francisco/Fresno, Cal./Jul 8, 1894" bicycle illustrated handstamp, very fine and choice.This inter-city service was established by Arthur C. Banta, the Fresno agent for Victor Bicycles, during the American Railway Union strike. Mail was carried from Fresno to San Francisco and back using messengers on bicycles. Service commenced from Fresno on 6 July, 1894 and continued to 18 July when the strike ended. Only a total of 380 letter were carried during this brief period of operation. All covers were numbered and eleven were carried without stamps on the first day of service. This cover is numbered 17 and was carried on the first day of service using the Bicycle Mail Route stamps.
