The road for miles is as thickly covered with bones & bodies of men & camels, every man's head had been severed from his body - we buried more than 1000 of these remains - there was one stockade across the road composed entirely of skulls....The expense of the 4 years has almost ruined India - whether England will have to pay a proportion we know not - it was Russia that caused the whole..." The writer blames Russia for the war and British intervention, but the British experience did not stop the Russians 150 years later (nor the Americans now), which eventually led to the breakup of the Soviet Union. Major Pottinger, in this letter, discusses the court of inquiry held following the disastrous British retreat from Kabul during the 1st Afghan War. Pottinger, earlier styled the "hero of Herat" by the British press, was one of the handful of hostages left behind in Kabul. Badly wounded earlier when the 4th Gorkhas were wiped out on the outskirts of Kabul, he escaped back into the city and became the political officer there during the siege replacing the murdered William Macnaghton. In the first dated 24th June, 1857 Sargent Bowen writes: "...the Mutineers took an officer and his lady prisoner - they tied him to the Muzzel of a Gun - his wife was in the family way - they tore the child from her - threw it at the Husband and then blew him from the Gun - another woman they tied in a chair and hung her 2 children in face of her and then slaughtered her..." In the second letter dated 24th October, 1857 he writes: "...they could lay hold of poor women & children. Murdering them was not the worst for before they done it they exhibited them Naked in the Bazzarrs - sold them as slaves who afterwards Ravished them and killed them but I hope to God they will pay for it..."
