I, an incredibly rare used example of this sought-after rarity, very well centered, with deep rich color, full even perforations and completely free of the faults you might expect to find on a used high value stamp, two strikes of a "Constantinople/7.11/02" postmark, very fine and choice. This stamp is not only one of the great rarities of the German Offices in Turkey, but also of all the German colonies, with only thirteen examples known to exist. This storied stamp originated from what is believed to have been only a single sheet of twenty error stamps that was sold unnoticed over the post office counter in Constantinople. Therefore, all examples are used, the stamps first having been discovered on packet cards to England and Holland.Signed Richter and accompanied by a 1997 Hollmann certificate; ex-Branz, Schnell (Michel #23 I DD; €12,000). I, an incredibly rare mint example of this intriguing stamp, beautifully centered, deep rich colors, small part original gum as are all examples, insignificant corner perf. tip crease not mentioned on accompanying certificate, still extremely fine. This striking stamp ranks as one of the great rarities of the German Offices in Turkey, with only eight recorded examples surviving. It was intentionally produced in the Fall of 1903 by the Reichs Post Printing Office for "pattern purposes" after a doubly surcharged sheet of the 5 Mark was unknowingly sold in Constantinople. The Reichs Postal Bureau doubted its authenticity and began an investigation, during the course of which this error was produced. However, the original error was on the Ty. I stamp, but the Reichs Post Printing Office produced these double surcharges on the Ty. II stamp. In addition, half of the sheet of 20 received the Type I surcharge and the other half received the Type II surcharges with the bar over the "A". This sheet of 20 was then passed on to the Reichs Postal Museum, whereupon eighteen copies were given away to unofficial recipients.
