#314A, 4c Brown imperforate, incredibly well centered within uncommonly large margins, with full Shermack perforations showing on both sides, intense prooflike color and impression, neat strike of the usual wavy line machine cancel, extremely fine.This stamp was issued in April of 1908 at the request of the Schermack Mailing Machine Company in Detroit. The Schermack Company, the largest and most well-known of the private vending and affixing companies, used large quantities of the one and two cent stamps of the period for their private vending and affixing machines. One of their customers, the Winfield Printing Company, placed an order with the Schermack Company to supply them with four cent stamps so that two of their clients, Hamilton Carhatt (a manufacturer of overalls and other men's clothing) and the Burroughs Adding Machine Company, could use the stamps to pay postage for sending their printed matter such as circulars or samples. The Post Office supplied a total of 10,000 of the requested four cent imperforate stamps to the Schermack Company so that the sheets could be cut into strips, pasted together to form coil rolls and then furnished with their well-known "perforations" for dispensing in their machines. No one in the philatelic world was aware of this special order, and had it not been for the fortuitous presence of a Detroit collector named Karl Koslowski, perhaps even fewer of these rare stamps would exist. It is believed that Mr. Koslowski, who learned of these new stamps through a friend at the Schermack Company, acquired 50 of these unusual stamps before departing on a trip to his Latvian homeland. There is some question whether he first saw the stamps in their imperforate form, or he may not have seen them until they had already been cut up and perforated. In effect, virtually the only known examples of this stamp are due to Mr. Koslowski, who retained approximately 20 unused examples and used the remainder on personal mail. There are just a few more known used examples which were taken off the commercial mailings of the Hamilton Carhatt and Burroughs companies, for an approximate total of 32 used examples.This is without question one of the very finest known examples of the Four Cent 1908 Imperforate, as all of this stamp's features - centering, margins, color, impression and perforations - are of extraordinary quality. The rarity of this stamp in any kind of acceptable quality is well known, with only a half dozen examples thought to exist that are both sound and still retain their Shermack perforations of both sides. Of this elite group, only perhaps one or two others can compare to the Collier copy. Accompanied by 1958 and 1998 PF certificates, as well as a 2009 PSE certificate (XF 90; SMQ $90,000.00); this is far and away the highest grade in the PSE population report, with the only other graded stamp a mere 40. #356, 10c Yellow coil, perf. 12 vert., an immensely rare used pair, radiant rich color, reasonably well centered for this, light Washington oval postmarks, fine; this pair's authenticity is unquestioned, as it was was originally part of a strip of 11 (positions 10-11) that was affixed, along with 50-60 other flat plate coils, to a remarkable 1911 registered cover prepared by cover servicer Henry Hammelman in Washington, D.C., the cover was lot 231 in the H.R. Harmer sale of the R. K. Albright Collection, sold on Nov. 19-20, 1946; only about 20 used pairs of #356 have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation; 1985 PF certificate and at one time had PF certificate #11,356 which no longer accompanies.
