#1, 1852 2rs Blue, Thiele printing, plate I, positions 81-82, types 7-8, the magnificent mint left sheet-margin horizontal pair, fabulously bright and fresh,
prooflike color and impression on crisp paper, in addition to the impressive sheet margin at left which measures 16mm, the other three margins are marvelously large and well balanced, pristine full o.g., the right stamp is only lightly hinged, while
the left stamp is never hinged, some vertical natural gum creasing entirely in the left margin well away from the stamps, superb in every respect. This spectacular mint pair is in a condition that is unimaginable for a stamp from the classic period
of philately. Every physical characteristic simply cannot be improved upon. Besides being in optimal condition, any mint multiple of this stamp is an immense rarity as only two blocks of four and two mint pairs exist in private hands. This being the
only multiple with a sheet margin.A stunning and unique exhibition piece for the finest collection of Denmark or simply for the connoisseur of gem quality classics of the world. This famous pair once graced the pages of the collection of the
renowned philatelist, Maurice Burrus, whose collections were sold in a series of breathtaking auctions in the 1960's. However, this pair was sold privately and has only appeared once at auction since the Burrus collections were dispersed. Accompanied
by both a 1984 Enzo Diena and a 1999 Lasse Nielsen certificate (Facit #1II). (Image) |

#2, 1852 4rs Red brown, Thiele I printing, plate II, position 68, used in combination with Great Britain 1851 1p Red brown, lettered CI, both tied to an
extraordinary folded printed matter letter sheet, sent from Newcastle-on-Tyne (England) to Denmark, the two stamps together paying the printed matter rate from England to Denmark, the 1p Great Britain stamp initially tied by local barred oval
postmark, then both stamps cancelled upon arrival in Denmark by mute target cancels in black, "Newcastle-on-Tyne/Ju 14/1852" circular postmark in blue on reverse, along with blue Hamburg double circle transit cancel, both stamps with three large
margins (fourth close to just touching), very fine and stunning.According to "The Classic Stamps of Denmark", published in 1992 by The Philatelic Foundation of Denmark, "The use of Danish stamps on mail to foreign countries was allowed from July
16th 1854, but it is an interesting fact that their use on mail from foreign countries was allowed more than two years earlier in May 1852. The postal circular no. 7 / 1852 allowed Danish stamps to be affixed to market circulars from Britain carried
directly between the two countries. In this manner the circulars could be prepaid and the Danish Post Office saved itself the trouble of collection of the Danish postage from the recipient. During 1852 and 1853 mail was carried directly between
Britain and Denmark on the London - Hamburg steamer. From the two years only a handful of these circulars with mixed frankings have survived."A fabulous mixed franking usage of stamps from two of the most popularly collected countries in the
world. It is not hard to understand why this impressive cover has been the cornerstone to several Grand Prix winning collections. Perfect for either the advanced collector of Denmark or Great Britain Line Engraved stamps and postal history.
Accompanied by a 1980 Slavomir Kaiser certificate; ex-Mott, Engellau, Anderson and Dr. Scott (Facit #2). (Image) |

#1a, 1856 5k Blue, small pearls, tête-bêche pair, the incomparable mint pair of this important classic rarity, large to huge margins all around, marvelously fresh,
with clear impressions, large part o.g., usual mild horizontal crease between the two stamps, extremely fine. This magnificent showpiece pair is, without a doubt, the finest mint tête-bêche pair of the 5 kopeck with small pearls in existence. This
being number 4 in the Linder listing of the 15 recorded tête-bêche pairs and blocks. However, none of the other existing examples are in the optimal state of preservation this pair possesses. Most existing examples are found with varying degrees of
faults and original gum examples are practically non-existent.This pair originally formed a block of four when offered in the famous Fabergé sale, which was held on March 14, 1940 (lot #32). Sometime between 1942 and 1946 the block was separated
into two pairs. Accompanied by both a 1945 Royal Philatelic Society certificate and a 1997 Rolf Gummesson certificate (Facit #1Iv3; 600,000SEK for a pair without gum). (Image) |
