2108 c 1867 5c Green, first re-engraving, an exceptionally attractive horizontal pair, positions 11-12, deep green color, large to huge margins all around, the top and right being the sheet selvage and about as large as they come, tied to entire folded1867 5c Green, first re-engraving, an exceptionally attractive horizontal pair, positions 11-12, deep green color, large to huge margins all around, the top and right being the sheet selvage and about as large as they come, tied to entire folded letter of June 28, 1868 to Cobija, the letter is datelined Sol (Sol de la Manana in the Department of Potosi), "10 cents." written in the top right corner, the pair is tied by a non-descript smear of ink, very fine; normally at this time letters from small towns went to the main district post office of the Department, in this case Potosi, but this was a considerable distance away in the wrong direction over mountains, Cobija was a relatively short distance in the other direction, so it is believed that this small post office without postal markings simply cancelled the stamps and sent it to Cobija directly; a fascinating and very rare small town usage. 2113 c 1867 5c Green, original plate, third state, two vertical pairs, positions 820 and 3244, clear green color and sharp impression mostly clear to extra-large margins, tied to a large part of an 1867 foreign mail folded cover to France including th1867 5c Green, original plate, third state, two vertical pairs, positions 8/20 and 32/44, clear green color and sharp impression mostly clear to extra-large margins, tied to a large part of an 1867 foreign mail folded cover to France including the front and back with all the markings that are so important to foreign mail covers, but lacking the other flaps, posted at the Sucre post office with central "Sucre" straight line handstamps on each, turned over to the British post office with clear "Cobija/C/OC 7 67" blue c.d.s. and sent due for the trans-oceanic postage with "GB/1F90c" British accounting handstamp and "12" decimes French due handstamp tying the bottom pair, that pair also tied by the Calais entry transit, London and Paris transits on the reverse, backstamped Bordeaux, pre-affixing corner scuff to the bottom stamp in of one pair and file fold affecting the top stamp of that same pair, still fine and attractive; this is only the third cover that we are aware that is a combination between the Bolivian post office using Condor stamps and the British Postal Agency at Cobija (Lamar); the other two covers had the British postage paid by a 1/- Great Britain adhesive while this cover was sent due; also the other two have only 10c internal postage while this has 20c, yet it is also unclear why this has 20c Bolivian postage for the internal rate since the foreign rate markings imply that this was not a double rate cover over 1/2oz; an extremely rare and interesting Condor usage; ex-N. 2114 c 1867 5c Green, original plate, fifth state, a gorgeous vertical pair, position 1527, with brilliant green color on fresh bright paper, balanced large even margins all around, tied to an amazing combination mixed franking entire foreign mail co1867 5c Green, original plate, fifth state, a gorgeous vertical pair, position 15/27, with brilliant green color on fresh bright paper, balanced large even margins all around, tied to an amazing combination mixed franking entire foreign mail cover of the Bolivian post office and the British post office of the British Agency in Cobija, Bolivia, the 5c Condor pair is tied by a light, but discernable, strike of the Bolivian post office "Lamar/Franca" black circular handstamp, at right is a Great Britain 1/- Green, plate 4, tied by a "C39" handstamp assigned to Bolivia with a light strike of the black "Cobija/C/NO 21 67" c.d.s. of the British Postal Agency, posted to Baltimore in the United States and receiving on the front a bold strike of the "N.Y. Steamship/10/Dec. 21" entry c.d.s. for incoming ship mail, faint file fold affects the bottom stamp of the pair but is visually unapparent, very fine and exceptionally attractive.The British Agency in Bolivia is among the rarest of all British foreign post offices. There are only two covers known with Condor and Great Britain mixed franking. When the other cover was offered in 1994 in the Collection of Dr. Paul J. Kornan featuring the Combination Mails of the British Foreign Post Office the debate was opened as to which was the better cover. It was argued that the Kornan cover was the better because the Bolivian stamps were tied by the British post office "C39" cancel. The irony of that is that the Kornan collection was featuring combination covers involving two post offices. The Kornan cover bears absolutely no Bolivian postal markings and there is no evidence that the Bolivian stamps did postal duty. It is conceivable that the sender intended to put it into the Bolivian post office and didn't or that he believed it required Bolivian postage. In either case it is highly possible that the letter was simply delivered it to the British Agency which cancelled all the stamps as post offices are wont to do. The significance of this is that the cover offered here is arguably the only known mixed franking of Bolivian and Great Britain stamps that actually was serviced by both post offices.The rarity of the the first Condor issue is magnified exponentially when the British Postal Agency at Cobija is involved. Condor covers of any kind are rare. Any mail out of the British post office at Cobija is also rare. When the two are combined the field is suddenly limited. Only three covers with Condor issues going through the British post office are known, the Kornan cover discussed above, a cover with Condor franking sent due to France through the British Agency offered in the previous lot and the cover offered here. This cover is, by far, the most significant of three; a spectacular postal history rarity of both Bolivia and of all British Foreign Post Offices; ex-Dale-Lichtenstein, N. Hubbard. 2115 c 1867 5c Green, original plate, fifth state, an exquisite foreign mail posting to Peru with vertical strip of four and single, positions 3167 for the strip and 31 for the single, paying the double letter rate to Pacific coastal countries, all tie1867 5c Green, original plate, fifth state, an exquisite foreign mail posting to Peru with vertical strip of four and single, positions 31/67 for the strip and 31 for the single, paying the double letter rate to Pacific coastal countries, all tied to entire folded letter dated July 31, 1867 by four strikes of ornamented "Paz de Ayachucho" ovals, posted to Tacna, choice very fine; with very few exceptions the 5c Green Condors were used predominately on internal covers and secondarily on covers to Argentina, Chile and Peru, the normal letter rate to these other countries was 20c, which are the most frequently encountered, while a double rate letter required only 5c more, they are seldom encountered; this and the next lot are believed to be the only 25c frankings using the Five Cent Green Condor issue; signed A. Rendon, P. Holcombe and accompanied by a 1984 Peter Holcombe certificate mistakenly identifying the stamps as from the first re-engraving of the plate, but plating confirms the collector's identification as the last state of the original plate; ex-Caspary.
