VERY FINE. A RARE BISECTED USAGE OF THE 1895 4-CENT WATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE, WHICH WAS APPARENTLY NECESSARY DUE TO A LACK OF ONE-CENT OR TWO-CENT STAMPS. ONLY TWO ARE KNOWN.

The notation was probably written by the postmaster as the return address and notation names are different. The matching half of the same stamp is on the cover offered in lot 554. (Image)
