VERY FINE. A STUNNING ESSAY FOR THE $1.00 1894 BUREAU ISSUE, WITHOUT CORNER TRIANGLES AND WITHOUT ANY DENOMINATION.
The $1.00 of the series was taken from the design for the 90c 1890 Issue. This essay shows the design with denomination removed and before the corner triangles were added. One other is known, with some lines further strengthened (see next lot), so this is the earliest essay for the issue. (Image)

VERY FINE. A RARE PASTE-UP ESSAY, COMBINING A PARTIALLY-PRINTED FRAME WITH A PASTE-UP OF THE VIGNETTE IN A DIFFERENT COLOR. ONE OF THE MOST STUNNING ESSAYS IN THE WHITPAIN COLLECTION.
This essay--with the vignette underneath printed in the same color as the frame but with the paste-up of the different colored vignette--indicates that the Bureau initially considered printing the higher values in more than one color. (Image)
VERY FINE AND CHOICE. THIS IS THE FIRST ESSAY FOR THE $1.00 VALUE TO SHOW TRIANGLES AT TOP AND WITH THE DENOMINATION MOSTLY ENGRAVED. A GREAT RARITY WHICH IS UNLISTED IN SCOTT.
This essay is unlisted in Scott and falls between Nos. 261-E4 (which displays the same characteristic but no corner triangles) and 261-E5 (which has the triangles and displays the finished denomination) so we have tentatively assigned it a new Scott number. Ex Earl of Crawford (Image)
VERY FINE. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL ESSAY FOR AN UNADOPTED DESIGN FOR THE $1.00 1894 BUREAU ISSUE, DEPICTING THE RECENTLY-DECEASED SENATOR JAMES B. BECK.
According to Wikipedia, Senator Beck was a former law partner of Vice President Breckinridge, the U.S. Vice President who became a Confederate general. Beck was appointed to the committee on the Reconstruction after the Civil War, where he became an advocate of the rights of the defeated states. He passed away on May 3, 1890. (Image)
