690 O 47var image47var: 50¢ deep blue in left margin block of ten with full original gum and 29 AP 1907 Ottawa cds cancels, part of the complete sheet of 100 supplied for precancellation experimentation, a few faults here and there but this is a unique 'used' multiple with original gum and a key display item for any advanced Small Queen or precancel collection. This lot is a portion of a complete sheet of 100 with full original gum which was cancelled by Ottawa 29 AP 1907 cds cancels, and supplied by E. Stanton, Superintendent of the Postage Stamp Branch to George Ross, Chief Post Office Superintendent for Toronto for experimental purposes in connection with precancellation. ESSAYS printed se-tenant on India paper, the first consists of the 1¢ and 3¢ finished designs (58 x 30mm) with manuscript ‘19’ at top, the other with the 5¢, 10¢ and 15¢ higher-denomination designs (84 x 29mm, never produced in plate format), both are mounted on greyish cloth-reinforced paper (86 x 76mm) excised from the British American Bank Note Co. Archive ledger book page (86 x 76mm with additional partial die/vignette proofs on back labelled ‘the Queen P1’, ‘Queen No 1½B’) with manuscript ‘137’ overtop of the 10¢, ‘138’ underneath the 5¢ and ‘139’ beneath the 15¢, a unique and significant proof which is certainly the cornerstone of any Canada Bank Note Engraving & Printing Co. or Canadian Essay/Proof collection, no matter how advanced or complete.
