Stamp of the Day

From Floyd E. Risvold Collection - American Expansion & Journey West - Spink Shreves Galleries - January 27-29, 2010

Lot 10 - PENSACOLA, largely clear straightline British Colonial handstamp on folded letter to St. Augustine, East Florida written by Robert Barrie, a civilian doctor attached to the British army in St. Vincent, West Indies, datelined "Camp at Grand Sable, 14th, December, 1772" and addressed to his wife at St. Augustine, where it arrived after a long and varied journey, probably carried by army boat from St. Vincent to Kingstown, Jamaica, where it entered the mails with "IAMAICA" straightline postmark and "Windward Islands" endorsement, and rated "In all d8" (4d to Pensacola, plus 4d from there to Charles Town), thence to Pensacola where it received a straightline "PENSACOLA" transit handstamp, then by ship to Charleston where it arrived with a "(CH)ARLES/(T)OWN" two-line straightline postmark and the "In all d8" was crossed out and replaced with "1N8" (1 shilling and 8 pence) and forwarded overland, the extra 1/- being for the final overland leg on the post road to St. Augustine, cover with some missing pieces added to the flaps, some internal splits and expertly silked for preservation, very fine and extraordinary usage, the only reported example of this combination of rare markings, llustrated in the Brakke and Robson Lowe Vol. 5; ex-Glassco.St. Vincent to Jamaica to Pensacola to Charles Town to St. Augustine seems like a very roundabout route, but the British mail packets did not stop at St. Augustine at the time. It should be noted that the sender wrote the "per the way of Carolina or Georgia" directive in the lower left corner of the cover. In the letter he writes: "Pilot is come to tell me the Boat is just going to sail, and the barrel that the letters are obliged to be put into headed up." This barrel containing the mails was towed out to the boat by the natives across the reefs and heavy surf. The British had acquired the Floridas, both East and West, from Spain by the Treaty of Paris in 1763 and then retroceeded them back to Spain by the Treaty of Versailles in 1783.....Est. $30,000-40,000 ...Sold for $100,000.00

Catalog at StampAuctionNetwork Online Images Available Public Auction US Material Worldwide Material Found in SAN Search Engine Rasdale Stamp Company - February 2010 Public Auction - February 13, 2010 Welcome to our 403nd Public Auction. The end of 2009 was a very busy time for us here at the Rasdale Stamp Company. Our final sale of 2009 was in the top five of sales, number one in number of bid sheets and percentage difference between the final hammer and the opening bids. We are convinced that the United States economy is back on the mend.

The final quarter of 2009 was also very successful acquiring material and in this sale you will find numerous interesting lots from many different owners and estates. The single section is very well rounded containing both United States and Worldwide issues. Never at one time have we had so many inverted varieties. For example the famous "CIA" invert, the Canadian "Seaway" invert, an Iran invert, (Scott 927a), and finally several Canal Zone inverts. Speaking of Canal Zone, you will discover an impressive U.S. Possession section including several dozen Hawaiian numerals. In the worldwide again, there is another notable grouping of Middle East. Our auctions have become renowned for the United States and Worldwide collection and accumulation section, many from estates. Sale 403 lives up to that distinction, with several dozen being offered. The top four are as follows, 18 albums sold individually from Florida with an presale estimate of $60,000, over 99 albums sold intact from a retired Colonel from Montana with an presale estimate of $35,000, 4 stuffed Internationals up to 1940 from the Rocky Mountain State with presale estimate of $25,000, and finally the Carbondale estate in several lots with an presale estimate of over $18,000. Catalog on the Web Online Images Available Mail Sale US Material Worldwide Material Postal History Eastern Auctions Ltd. - Mail Auction - March 3, 2010 Eastern Auctions second mail sale of 2010 closes on the 3rd of March with almost 5000 lots offered. This sale seems to have managed to develop quite a special personality of its own. You will find that both our Canada/BNA and the USA sections have been nicely enhanced. The Classic USA section is impressive; not only for the number of stamps, but also for the quality and diversity offered. In Canada, the hard to find coil varieties are not often represented as well as they are in this sale. Similarly, the Newfoundland section is outstanding, with many difficult to find stamps. This sale has strength in large lots. Collectors and Dealers alike would be wise to budget some time to carefully review our descriptions. The competition for the larger USA and Canada lots is always spirited. Of late we have noticed this enthusiasm is spreading into the Commonwealth and World Wide large lots sections. There is excellent potential for fun and profit for the person willing to commit the time to focus on one or more of these larger items. Remember that “Est.” before a price is an estimation of the actual cash value of a lot by one or more of our professional lotters. Bidding is in Canadian Dollars; invoices for winning bids in other currencies will be adjusted. As always there is No Buyer’s Premium and satisfaction is guaranteed. Bid with confidence. email: easternauctions@nb.aibn.com
